Cold Transmission Festival: Crying Vessel, Iamtheshadow, Joy/Disaster, Silent Runners in Cologne, 13.07.2019

It’s Saturday night in the middle of Cologne. Many people dressed in black gather in front of Club Blue Shell, directly at a crossroads with a small forecourt. With this event the label Cold Transmission celebrates not only the 50th birthday of the label boss Andreas Hermann but also the new international connection they have created with their efforts in the last years. The connection stretches across several continents, connects New-Wave with Post-Punk, connects Cold-Wave with Dark-Wave. Tonight is the day – the scene can celebrate itself as well as the label and many committed people finally have the chance to get to know each other personally.

Crying Vessel

Crying Vessel were starting at 7:30. Slade Templeton and drummer Bassil entertained the audience with a cross-genre mix of synth pop, dark wave and post punk.

Already at the first concert we noticed that the small festival is almost sold out. The black and white tiled floor, which is still reflected in the neon blue illuminated light at the beginning, is no longer visible, so many people want to see the bands.

Besides the songs from the current EP “Illusions” the band also plays songs from previous releases.

After about 40 minutes show fans and artists meet outside the club to catch their breath and chat, new and old (internet) acquaintances get to know each other.

Iamtheshadow featuring Antipole

After a short break we continued directly with Iamtheshadow from Portugal, whom we had been looking forward to. Not only because they played with Antipole this time but also because we liked them so much at the Wave Gothic Treffen in 2017. There they were a kind of surprise discovery. In the two years a lot happened and also a new album with the title “Embracing the fall” was released.

Iamtheshadow plays mainly Dark-Wave and have found a great partner this year with Antipole. The remixes that both artists have released for each other have now become a cooperation that also works well on stage. At the Cold Transmission Festival Iamtheshadow singer Pedro presented two Antipole songs live to the audience for the first time. No wonder that the guests were crowded in front of the stage in order not to miss any of the intensive performance.

With the song “October Novel” Karl Morten Dahl from Antipole finally came on stage and played the concert together until the end. At the last song all band members left the stage except singer Pedro. He stood alone on the small club stage and sang “Embracing The Fall” – an absolute goose bump factor!

Joy/Disaster

Joy/Disaster released their album “Aeternum” about half a year ago. The band performs live a fast post-punk with a lot of energy, which often goes strongly in the direction of indie rock. Vocalist Nico is really accelerating with the whole band and makes the crowd dance and jump fast!

The whole club is shaking now and the audience can’t be held anymore. Also the bar is happy – with so much good music the Kölsch sells quite well.

Silent Runners

As the last band of the evening, the Silent Runners have an interesting package on stage today. The band from the Netherlands recently re-released their album “The Directory” in a Cold Transmission Edition. In addition to the already released songs, it contains several remixes by other artists, including Antipole and Crying Vessel.

The concert and the performance of the band is then also unique, even the appearance alone takes us back to the 80s of the last millennium. So the band fits perfectly to their sound and quickly inspires the whole audience. With the Silent Runners, Cold Transmission has succeeded in bringing the first festival to a super close.

Setlist

  1. Human Capital
  2. Wilderness
  3. Dark Mountain
  4. I Walk Away
  5. Again

  8. Forgotten

Our conclusion

The first Cold Transmission Festival was a great success thanks to great bands and a great organization. It was more than a pure music festival with a birthday party – it was a successful “meet and greet” of the international post-punk scene. All bands and visitors have hopefully taken very nice impressions from the great city on the Rhine with them and will soon meet again at another festival.

Many thanks to Suzy and Andreas Hermann for the great organization!
